Az Internet Service Providers

Anyone have something other than Cox, Qwest or Dish Network? I remember a couple smaller companies floating around but looks like they may have been swallowed up. I did a Google search and there was a company called "Phoenix Internet" but never heard of them.

Any info or leads would be super duper.

Jstarda9 06-24-2011 10:31 AM

If you mean swallowed up your probably mean forced into being bought out by the big companies.

They is Hughes net which is satillite high speed internet.

Comcast

Deru

Juno Netzero if you like slow

nelsmar 06-24-2011 10:34 AM

There is qwest. Satellite sucks hard dick. Most of those small companies suck. I deal with them a lot at work and i cant believe the number of times the company has said "were just a small company" for an excuse towards ISP issues.

1 point 6 06-24-2011 10:36 AM

I hate COX to death and Qwest seems like the lesser of two evils. I remember we had internet through this place A1 or some shit in Gilbert but I think COX made them be their bitch.

Just looking for maybe a reliable smaller company people like....or at this point exists.

db4grl 06-24-2011 10:39 AM

i just got qwest and i like i play xbox live while my girl plays ps3 online and have the laptop hooked up and and never have any problems. Its only running me i think like 40 bucks maybe lil more with my phone line and internet

nelsmar 06-24-2011 10:40 AM

Most companies are just qwest resellers that rent their own fiber and route you thru qwest's lines. This requires an extra hop to access the internet and hell half hte time cost more or.... you get horrible speeds.

These companies are small and have a low client base so they dont increase speeds yearly as much.

What is so wrong with COX? COX has been one of the best ISPS i have ever dealt with. After using a "small" company internet for yeras, and be excited about getting 1.5mb a sec downstream... COX is bliss lol.

Not to mention I have to have high upload speeds. Qwest doesnt even provide 1mb up.

1 point 6 06-24-2011 10:52 AM

COX seems to think I have kept a DVR box of their and wants $600, even after written documentation that it has been returned. Qwest seems like the lesser of two evils at this point.

Thanks for the feedback.

lol what a bunch of idiots

B18CivicEJ8 06-24-2011 02:53 PM

Maybe it's not offered in your area, but I beg to differ. I have their vDSL service that provides 40mb down and 20mb up. It's only $60 a month with phone service. I have a basic land line for my home alarm system. Total with taxes and all that is a little over $90 a month. They also have a 40 meg down 5 meg up for $45, etc. Allegedly, it's fiber to the pedestal and copper for the local loop.

DrDanni 06-24-2011 03:03 PM

Cox FTW

post your results.

And this is with my sister watching netflix, yo!

1 point 6 06-24-2011 03:50 PM

1 point 6 06-24-2011 04:40 PM

Lol not kept on purpose I still have it nigg

Mighty Max 06-24-2011 05:09 PM

From personal experience I'd recommend Cox ISP. Had it in the last house and I have it in my current house.

I've got the middle tier package that usually pulls 28-30Mb/s Down and 11-14Mb/s Up.
I'm just using a simple Motorola Surfboard modem and a Netgear wireless router (forgot model numbers)

It holds up fine with combined use from a desktop, XBL, 2 laptops an Ipad2, and smartphones in wifi mode. It'll stream netflix to any device anywhere in the house without any lagging issues.

Another seperate company maybe to check out though would be Integra Telecom. But I'm not 100% sure if they do residential. (Honestly I've not been super happy with the service, but it's enough for day to day stuff at the warehouse.)

Meat_Lovers_Pizza 06-24-2011 07:24 PM

atleast 10up and 5-6 down..

B18CivicEJ8 06-24-2011 07:37 PM

Qwest vDSL (HD Internet), 40 meg down/20 meg up.

PhxKid92 06-24-2011 07:38 PM

IS THAT GOOD??

VTECin5th 06-24-2011 08:36 PM

1 point 6, I fell into the same boat as you. I went with Qwest and couldn't be more unhappy... unless I was with Cox.

My qwest was $45/month for 12d/1u. Which is pretty slow. They recently changed my bill to 71 so I called to cancel and now I'm at $40/month flat rate for a year. At the end of this 12 month "contract", I will likely return to Cox on a D3 modem and see what's possible. Qwest customer service is worse than any other place I've ever called. Signing up they told me I would get a $50 Visa giftcard, my modem would be pro-rated and my service would stay at $45 as long as I didn't lapse or change anything. I never got my giftcard, and no department knows why. My modem wasn't pro-rated. My bill stayed at 45 for 11 months and then went to 55 before going to 71. Nobody could explain this either. And, my modem will drop at least once per day for no reason. But, I still hate Cox enough to let it ride for one more year.

Cox says my cable modem isn't mine and that it is tied to someone else's old/inactive/owed account. Which is 99% impossible. I bought the modem at walmart, had service on it, moved to my house, and suddenly it was owned by someone else. The only 1% chance is if someone broke into my storage while I was moving and replaced their modem with mine. Now, I did have several modems at one time but my subscribed modem has always been a 5120 and then a 5100. All my others were 5101 for haxorware.

There was a time when I had 4-5 modems in my house all running the 225 config and I was downloading stuff from usenet at stupid speeds. I probably ruined the bandwidth in this area during that week.

BTW, what nelsmar said is true. The smaller internet companies lease a line from Qwest or Cox (maybe Verizon now) and charge a lot more for it. I used to work for a small internet company that provided "high speed" wireless internet to the east valley because they didn't have Cox/Qwest out there yet. It was pretty slow and very expensive and not reliable because anything in the way of the 2 antennas would interrupt the signal. At this company, it was a Cox line.

I want Comcast or CableOne to come to Phoenix :D

Meat_Lovers_Pizza 06-24-2011 11:01 PM

rofl @ "HD" internet. I pay for 22up and 5 down with cox and I just switched to a 3.0 docsis modem. I average about 30up and 12down

CAPTAIN CAAAAAAAVEMAN 06-24-2011 11:06 PM

i get a different result if i got to the speed test . net or there is also a arizona cox speed test site which usually reads faster than the speed test site

nelsmar 06-25-2011 08:34 AM

I have yet to meet anyone that actually was in the service area for that uber rare connection. If i was i would get it... i would looveeee the extra upload speed. If you cannot get the fiber connection its something like 796k upload... Which i couldn't live with.

Motorola 6120 w/ docsis 3.0 technology for sale on Amazon,

I wonder if it is worth my while to purchase

VTECin5th 06-25-2011 10:01 AM

Not now Joe... well, what price?

The 6120 is going to be around like the 5100, 5101 and 5120 are now. Don't get it until you need it. By that time, it'll be cheap and easy to find. Look at the Docsis 3.0 standards and if it's worth it to you and supported in your node. I believe the modified 6120 firmware might be done or close to it by now. But, I won't buy one until the firmware is done and stable.

Fix.it.again.Tony 06-25-2011 10:37 AM

86 bucks, ain't that bad lol, just verified through Cox that DOCSIS 3.0 is available in my area also.
